Kodungallur Bharani Festival Celebrated

The two most important days of Kodungallur Bharani, the festival at Kodugallur Bhagavathy temple 08 and 09 of April 2016 witnessed colorful rituals and events.

The preparations for Kodungallur Bharani started a month before. The most spectacular event of the festival is Kavu theendal  in which hundreds of oracles, men and women in red costumes and holding swords, accompanied by devotees making rhythmic sound using bamboo stem and throwing turmeric powder, pepper etc., rush to the temple premise creating a terrifying scene. This was observed on 08th April. Processions by ladies carrying plates with oil lamp and flowers will arrive the temple on the final day morning. Every year thousands of devotees from all parts of Kerala reach the the temple on these days.



Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple (Kodungallur Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy temple) is one of the ancient temples in Kerala at Kodungallur, Thrissur Dist. The idol of Bhadrakali (Goddess) is about 6ft height.  Vasoorimala, considered as the Goddess for chickenpox and small pox is a subsidiary deity here. Pepper and turmeric powder are favorite offering for this deity
.
